I’m on Patrol

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

I apologize for not writing in my blog yesterday, but mom and I were just feeling too bad. Mom still has her headache, but I’m not throwing up anymore; thank goodness.

When I went outside this morning, I did my usual patrol around the perimeter fence. When I got to where Katy is resting, I smelled a rat. Indeed, it was a real big and chubby rat; at least that’s what mom said. I smelled it before I saw it. I tried to creep upon it, but I guess I stepped on a leaf or something–usually I pretty good about sneaking upon things. I think it saw me at the same time I saw it.

It started running toward the front gate, and I was right behind it. It just barely escaped. I turned around and saw mom coming towards me, and so I started running up and down the front fence line–the one by the highway. When mom got to the gate, she stopped and started looking around to see if she could see what I had been chasing. Lo and behold, it was just sitting across the road looking back at us.

I barked my frustration, but mom said I did a good job; that I was a great guard dog. I was protecting Katy and the rest of my family that rests under and by the tree.

I bet that dirty rat doesn’t come back here anymore. But. if it does, I’ll be watching.

I didn’t mean to do it!

I hate to tell you this, but I did something terrible. Mom has always taught all of us to respect other living things whether it is a flower or a bug or even a wasp. I like to play with things, but I would never hurt anything on purpose. But, that’s what happened.

Mom took all of us out this morning to do our business. When we got ready to come back inside, I spied a movement out of the corner of my eye. I stood real still for a minute. Mom told us to “get in the house”; those are the words she uses when she is serious. I do have to admit it was pretty windy, but it was real warm outside. So, I kinda stood there looking to see if something was going to move.

So, very slowly, I began to creep towards where I thought I saw some movement in the grass. Hilde came over to join me, but Wooly and Kasha went into the house. I was almost to the place where I thought the movement came from. Then, all of a sudden, this little furry creature darted toward the front gate. I made a running leap (sort of kind a tackle, really) and caught it on the fly. I had it my mouth ready to take to mom and show her what I had found to play with.

Mom told me to drop it, and I did so immediately. But, I guess I accidentally hurt it when I caught it, because mom told me I should be ashamed of myself. So, you know the worse. I admit I did it, but I didn’t mean to.
