Do You Know What DOT COM (.com) Means?
Sunday, March 29th, 2009I know a lot of people get confused when others start talking in extensions pertaining to files, websites, etc. “Come on, let’s use the dot-com extension,” says the first one.
“No, let’s use the dot-exe one,” says the second one.
Humans who are not used to tech-talk can really be confused, especially when they don’t know the difference between the dot-com used in programming and the dot-com used in websites. The former refers to a “command” line which is a character string that tells a program to perform a specific action, and the latter refers to “commercial” and tells the user that it is a website which is for general use. And, it can get more complicated when referring to file extensions.
Have you ever had a file on your computer with the extension of dot-jpg? If you have no idea what this might mean, you need to go to the File Extension Library; it has over a 1,000 listings. This site explains that a file extension is the portion of a file name located at the end of a file after the dot. Not only does it explain things in a layman language, it gives suggestions on how to find and open a particular file with a particular extension. You probably do not need to go there immediately, but keep in mind where to go for help with your unknown file extensions. And the place to remember is file extension jad.
I know, if you are like me, you need all the help you can get. By the way, my mom helped me with this.
