Dad’s candy caught ‘em!

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

You’re never going to believe this.

Just when I thought I had our yard and house safe from those furry little critters mom calls mice–guess what?

Dad went to bed early last night, and mom and I stayed up to watch television. Mom was sitting in dad’s chair, and I was in Hilde’s chair because she was taking up the whole couch. Dad’s candy bag was on the shelf by our satellite receiver. All at once, mom jumped up and called for Paul–my human brother.

He came down to the tv room and asked mom what she needed. She told him that there was a mouse in dad’s candy bag. He asked, “Are you sure”? She told him that of course she was sure. He said he would be right back and went to his room.

He came back with gloves on and asked if the mouse was still in the candy bag. Mom told him that it was still there. He went over and picked up the bag and told mom he was going down to the creek and let it loose. Mom told him to let the candy bag stay with the mouse, and, just maybe, the little critter would not come back looking for peanut butter cups. I wanted to go with Paul, but he said “No, stay here, you’ll just chase it, and I won’t be able to find you in the dark.” So, reluctantly, I stayed in the house.

When Paul came back, he told mom that there were two mice in that unsuspecting-looking mouse trap. He said he felt one when he picked up the bag but felt another when he opened the breezeway door to go outside because he had to shift the bag to open the door. I know I could have caught them if I had had the chance, but, no, I had to stay in the house.

I showed my displeasure at Paul by ignoring him the rest of the night even though he watched television with us for a while.
